Collecting survey responses in Microsoft Forms and need help making sense of them?
I’ve done a lot of work with Microsoft Forms, and I love it for building surveys. It’s really easy and intuitive to get a quick form created and sent out.
That convenience comes at the cost of some of the analytical solutions that bigger, more targeted platforms provide.
The problem: There’s no inbuilt response tagging feature
My biggest issue was that once the responses come in, there’s no way to tag them, which makes it difficult to figure out how many times something gets mentioned across the responses.
The solution: A spreadsheet template to make it easier to tag survey responses
To solve this problem, I created an Excel template that I’d like to share with anyone who might be running surveys via MS Forms.
How it works
- After copying and pasting your data across from the spreadsheet that Forms lets you export, you can:
- Tag open text responses using your own tag list, with up to three tags per response
- Pick tags from a dropdown, so everything stays consistent
- See which things are most frequently mentioned with ready-made dashboards
If you’ve included any segmentation questions (e.g. “What colour socks do you buy?”), you can also:
- Filter the dashboards by the groups your respondents fall into
It’s designed for small surveys (two open text questions, two segmentation questions and 300ish responses), but can be scaled up with a bit of tweaking.
It will also work with any other platform that lets you export your data into a spreadsheet format.
